Today’s guest was an Infantryman in the 2nd Infantry Regiment, which, at the time of his deployment was in the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division. He deployed to Fob Anbar in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan.
During their deployment, they conducted 2200 patrols and were able to kill or capture more than 250 insurgents and discovered 11 weapons cache.
We recorded this episode in the comfort of my kitchen while drinking beer and whiskey. Testosterone was high my friends. The stories were flowing. This is the first episode of a three-part series.

I realized that, at a fundamental level, when things go to shit, I am, or perhaps we are, as a society, conditioned to take the easy way out. Just like someone eating an entire pack of HoHos because they feel sad.
I can’t help but somehow feel a connection with this sentiment to what we’re currently experiencing with the coronavirus. A loss of immediacy, a high level of restriction, and our inability to control the situation. We can't do what we want to do, when we want it. And we can't simply avoid it by eating a pack of HoHos. This is the essence of a combat deployment and an understatement when considering combat itself.
I chatted with a good friend with a wealth of knowledge, initially joining the military as a marine infantryman prior to 9/11, and then moving over to the army in 2006. He owns the best gym that I’ve been a member of. Particularly what makes it so special is the lack of ego, which initially inspired me to frame our conversation around the idea of fostering team-culture, but our conversation drifted to ideas about austerity, accountability, and control, and how it relates to the situation we’re currently living in. Perhaps we'll save that conversation for another time.
In this episode, we'll hear about an Italian soldier in the fetal position of an Iraqi rooftop during a gunfight (very nice people!), and the extreme ownership of a marine who felt responsible for a trivial situation years later. This is James Taulbee. @jamesthatstrongmanguy @fireforeffectathletics

This is Levi Harrison. A skilled artist, podcaster, musician, paint salesman, and veteran, among many other things. In this episode, we’ll be using Levi’s stories about ending up in Bahrain without a passport, and his experience with ship overboard procedures on the USS Roosevelt (the same ship with the command and coronavirus controversy) to discuss some of the darker incidents and people we’ve encountered while in the service.

Given the diverse population of the military, and the nature of the organization (interacting with the populace of other countries) culture shock happens frequently. Interestingly, there were some people in my unit who I just couldn't jive with that I eventually came to appreciate after deployment. I often wonder what the mechanism was that allowed that to happen. Was it because, after spending so much time together, that I eventually understood who they were? Or is there something about sharing a commitment to a common goal that facilitates a shared understanding and rapport?
Stuart Campbell, who helped me out when I was dealing with my own culture shock of reintegrating into the civilian world, tells a story about when he experienced his own culture clash (and his subsequent enlightenment) on deployment.

Robert Balise was my guide when I did a tour of the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado. He had a serious presence to him and was a great storyteller. Once I heard that he was a vet I knew I wanted to bring him on. In this episode, he talks about his life as a Cav Scout, the first time he was exposed to combat, and how that experience mentally changed him.

Howdy Friends,
This is the Instagram for my new creative project: In Theater. I like podcasts, and I like stories, so why not create a podcast about a subject as captivating as war? In each episode of this podcast I’ll talk to a veteran and they’ll tell a few stories from when they were deployed.
Deployment stories are usually pretty profound. A lot of stories are about self-transformation or enlightenment. A lot are about things that push our moral or politically correct boundaries, like violence and cultural conflict. However, many stories involve the mundane - like spending days reading off and verifying the serial numbers of sensitive items, or querying the people on your base as to why there are no toilets inside Afghan portapotties. What’ll make this podcast interesting is that the stories won’t be filtered - they’ll be told from the people who experienced them.
The episodes are in all of the major podcast listening platforms, like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, and Google Play. Currently waiting on the Apple Podcast one to update, but that should only take a few days. I also created a website that'll give context and photographs into the stories that are told. It’s www.intheaterpodcast.com.
I hope y’all appreciate these stories as much as I do!
